Realistic Gaming at Triples

And by this I don't want to enter the debate as to whether the rules being used are "realistic" or not.

This is about the demonstration and participation games at wargames shows.

While I can stand and look in awe at the incredibly detailed and contoured scenery created for set piece demonstration games and can respect the effort that has gone into them, to me they are not wargaming and miss the point about demo and participation games at shows.

What I prefer to see are games that reflect what one might see as a good club night game or what you might put on on your home table. In other words they reflect the reality of day to day wargaming. They are the reality of what an uninitiated outsider can expect if he decides to pck up the hobby.

I was pleased to see a significant number of games meeting my preferred criteria at Triples this year. All these below hit my criteria for honest wargaming reality

Abbeywood Irregulars
A game set on the Honduras-Nicaraguan Border in 1959

Burton and District Wargamers
An AWI Game to "Washingtons Wars"
Action at Green Springs Farm

Ilkley Old School Gamers
With the iconic simplicity of Old School Gaming

Huntingdon and District
With a 6mm Salamanca

Leeds Night Owls
Making effective use of green teddy bear fur

Durham Wargames Group (With the Two at Lardies)
A "Dux Britannicum" participation game

The Mossborough Old Boys
15mm ECW

Penarth and District Wargamers
40mm "Down Mexico Way"

Society of 20th Century Wargamers
Again effective use of (a less shaggy) teddy bear fur

Sheffield and Rotherham Gamers
A Vietnam Scenario

Lance and Longbow Society
A group who always let the quality of the figures speak for the hobby

Company of Veterans
Borodino

Under the GWP banner
A VBCW Game
